ABOUT THE SHOW:
In the late 1940s, Stine, a bookish writer of detective stories, struggles to adapt his crime novel into a workable screenplay. As Stine tries to maintain some integrity in the backstabbing world of Hollywood, his protagonist, a hardboiled private eye named Stone, fights for survival in a city full of criminals and opportunists.

With wit, humor, and a fantastic Cy Coleman score, City of Angels captures the snappy dialogue of a Raymond Chandler detective novel and the glitzy showmanship of classic Hollywood; the result is a crowd-pleasing musical unlike any other.

UPRIGHT RATING: PG-13 (Parental Advisory)
*Sexual innuendo and adult situations. Not recommended for young children.

ROLES AVAILABLE:
NOTE: Roles with a / indicate a role with a character in each of Stine’s Hollywood and Stone’s film noir.

STINE (Age: 30-45, Vocal Range: Baritone, G#2 - G4)
A successful crime novelist. He struggles despite his competence with Buddy’s constant changes and manipulations. His shame often spirals into vice instead of pushing him to act like he should - for which he envies his creation. (Please note this role requires onstage intimacy).

STONE (Age: 30-45, Vocal Range: Baritone, G#2 - F4)
The hero of Stine’s novel and film. He is a tough ex-cop who became a private eye after a messy exit from the force. His wit and gruff exterior hide an unshakeable moral core and enduring love - which he expects his creator to emulate. (Please note this role requires onstage intimacy).

GABBY/BOBBI (Age: 30-45, Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto, Eb3 - F5)
Stine’s wife and soulmate, who asks only that he strive to be the best version of himself. She is beautiful, patient, supportive... and clever enough to see right through her husband/A nightclub singer who is the lost love of Stone’s life. Her troubled past forced him to leave the police force. (Please note this role requires onstage intimacy).

DONNA/OOLIE (Age: 25-35, Vocal Range: Alto, G3 - F5)
Buddy Fidler’s wise-cracking secretary who takes quite a liking to Stine - though she realizes quickly she’ll never have his heart/Stone’s loyal ‘Girl Friday’ secretary who goes to great lengths to support and protect him. She’s perfect... but Stone’s already given his heart away. (Please note this role requires onstage intimacy).

BUDDY FIDLER/IRWIN S. IRVING (Age: 35-60, Vocal Range: Baritone, C3 - Eb4)
A micromanaging movie producer/director in charge of Stine’s screenplay. He always knows what’s best for the film... conveniently, it’s always what’s also best for him. Master of Hollywood politics/An unpleasant movie mogul - a reflection of Stine’s feelings towards Buddy.

CARLA HAYWOOD/ALAURA KINGSLEY (Age: 30-45, Vocal Range: Mezzo, G3 - E5)
Buddy’s wife - a beautiful and successful actress. Knows how to get her kicks and keep upstart actresses in their place/The ultimate femme fatale. Alluring, mysterious, and dangerously beautiful. Wife of Luther Kingsley. (Please note this role requires onstage intimacy).

AVRIL RAINES/MALLORY KINGSLEY (Age: 18-25, Vocal Range: Alto, G#3 - B4)
A gorgeous young starlet who will do anything to achieve fame and fortune. Plies her talents on the casting couch, but not with great wit/Alaura’s missing stepdaughter - Stone’s original target. Free willed, mischievous, seductive... and swimming in far deeper waters than she knows. (Please note this role requires implied nudity and onstage intimacy).

JIMMY POWERS (Age: 20-35, Vocal Range: Bari/Tenor, C3 - G4)
A handsome crooner. He is popular and hopes to glow ever brighter by adding movie star to his resume.

PANCHO VARGAS/LIEUTENANT MUNOZ (Age: 30-45, Vocal Range: Baritone, D3 - F#4)
A Latin heartthrob actor/Stone’s aggrieved ex-partner in the police force - believing he betrayed everything they worked for. Muñoz waits patiently for a chance to put his old friend behind bars.

ANGEL CITY FOUR (Stage Age: 20-50, Vocal Range: SOPRANO - (A3 - A5), ALTO - (A3 - D#5), TENOR - (D#3 - B4), BASS - (G2 - G#4))
An accomplished and stylish jazz quartet that acts as a Greek chorus. These are extremely challenging and musically intricate tracks, requiring strong musicality and confidence in holding one of four harmonies at all times.

WERNER KRIEGLER/LUTHER KINGSLEY (Age: 40-60+, Vocal Range: Spoken)
A Hollywood actor/Alaura’s (much) older husband and patriarch of the wealthy Kingsley family. Once great, he is now trapped in an iron lung due to ill health.

GERALD PIERCE/PETER KINGSLEY (Age: 20-35, Vocal Range: Spoken)
A Hollywood actor/Alaura’s stepson - good-looking, callow, and appears to favor his stepmother more than is decent.

GENE/OFFICER PASCO/ORDERLY (Age: 20-35, Vocal Range: Spoken)
Buddy’s devout production assistant/Munoz’s junior police partner. Shares his distaste and hostility for Stone/One of Dr Mandril’s zealous supporters.
